A Bit About Me
My name is Sophie Gutermuth and I am the owner of Higher Standard Paint Co. I went to Indiana University, where I completed 2 degrees and was also part of the track and field team. After finishing college, I continued training as a professional pole vaulter, working towards an olympic dream. The summer of 2024 was my final year training, and now I focus full time on my business! Although I have an educational background in fitness and public health, I have found my true enjoyment and passion in home improvement, specifically painting! I have 7+ years of experience as a painter. My painting journey started as a summer job in college to make some extra money. It turned into part time work for a couple of different employers, and has now evolved into my own full time business! My goal as a painter and business owner is to build genuine connections with my clients and attain the best work possible for every job, as well as to achieve the highest standard of quality. I pay specific attention to detail, cleanliness, and professionalism, and my main objective is customer satisfaction!

After finishing my Masters degree at Indiana University, I worked for IU in Athletic Maintenance, where my primary duty was to help maintain all athletic facilities with simple touch up jobs and full repaints. I held this position until the end of 2020, when I was furloughed during Covid.
After being furloughed from IU, I applied to work for Loren Wood Builders and was hired onto his team! I worked as a painter for Loren for just over a year. With Loren Wood being such a high end building company, I was taught the importance of paint job preparation and I learned how to navigate more detailed work.
In 2021 I stepped away from working with Loren Wood to focus on my athletic career, as a professional pole vaulter, while I trained for the olympic trials. Although I was no longer working for anyone, my reputation as a painter had grown enough to pick up some side work for friends around the area. Word of mouth took my painting gig from side work to a full time business, and in April of 2022 Higher Standard Paint Co. was born!
